Professor Danuta Hübner has been invited to the Spinelli Group, whose first meeting took place on September 15th in the European Parliament. The group was established because of the insufficiency of a European vision and a lack of ideas in the European Union that would unite citizens around a European concept. The aim of the group is to indicate and determine the direction of the European discussion, to propose effective solutions, which would facilitate getting out of crisis situations in the EU, and to act in the interests of the community.
The members of the group have established Altiero Spinelli (one of the founding fathers of Europe, a federalist, an advocate of a political union, a visionary and a great European) as their patron.
After the first meeting it was decided that the Spinelli Group will act on three levels:
1. The founding/original/principal group made up of 33 members.
2. Members of parliament/ministers who are familiar with the federal and communal approach.
3. Citizens who can take part in the discussion through an online forum.
It has been established that twice a year, just before the European Council, a so-called „Shadows Council“ will be organized, during which the Spinelli Group will present its own conclusions. Among the topics, which will be included in the activity of the Spinelli Group are: security issues, budget, financial supervision and diplomatic service. Moreover, once a year on May 9th a meeting for all the supporters of the Group will take place.
The founders of the group are four members of parliament/ministers: Daniel Cohn-Bendit, Guy Verhostadt, Isabelle Durant and Sylvie Goulard. Other members include: Jacques Delors, Mario Monti, Joschka Fischer and Pat Cox.
Prof. Hübner about the importance of the Spinelli Group:
“The establishment of the Spinelli Group is significant for a number of reasons. Ever more of the challenges that Europe faces – the crisis, climate change, energy security, the aging of our societies – require common European solutions. The purpose of this group, at the basis of which lies a deep awareness of a common European interest, is giving direction to the debate concerning the future of the EU and acting upon the decisions made at the European level. We wish to strengthen Europe because we are responsible for it. I am convinced that a strong and integrated Europe will be able to respond to the expectations of citizens more effectively and have a greater significance in the world.”
