In Greece on cohesion policy, December 10, 2010

Athens

Professor Danuta Hübner participated in a conference on the topic of cohesion policy and local authorities ("European Regional Policy and Local Governments"), which took place in Athens. MEPs Stabros Lambridinis - vice chairman of the European Parliament and chief of the delegation of Greek socialists, Martin Schulz - chief of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, and commissaries Johannes Hahn and Maria Damanaki were among the guests. Government representatives including Prime Minister George Papandreou and Michalis Chrisochoidis - responsible for regional development and competitiveness in the Greek government, participated in the meeting.

Professor Hübner drew the participants’ attention to increasing the role of regions in Greece after the decentralization that was carried out. Thanks to the reforms, the foundation of managing funds has been transformed, and political power has been transferred to the regional and local level. In Professor Hübner’s opinion, the visible consequences of this reform should reveal themselves in increased competitiveness of regions and in the creation of new jobs.
